Karthik calling karthik - first look

Top chartbusters of 2009

The year 2009 had been a great year for the music lovers as the industry churned out various hits each with a different style ranging from soft romantic numbers to rustic numbers, youthful songs to fun-filled light music. Let us have a look at the songs which topped the music charts in the year which is dying off.
Emotional Atyaachar
This song from ‘Dev D’ was an unexpected hit and was liked by younger generations because of its uniqueness and difference. The song has been sung by Bony Chakravarthy. Composed by Amit Trivedi, it echoes the music and energy of marriage bands. It is by far the greatest hit of 2009 and stands out among other songs released during that period.

Masakalli
Oozing freshness in every way, this expressive number from A.R.Rehman swept the music lovers off their feet. This fun-filled light number from the film ‘Delhi-6′ sung by Mohit Chauhan is still a hot favorite of music channels.

Dhan Te Nan
This edgy, energetic, and rustic number from ‘Kaminey’ has a touch of rock to it. Composed by Vishal Bhardwaj, the song has been sung by Sukhwinder Singh and Vishal Dadlani. This rocking number has topped the music charts of 2009.

Tera Hone Laga Hoon
This is by far the most romantic and soothing number of 2009. Pakistani Singer Atif Aslam has sung this song with Alsiha Chinoi. Pritam has composed a beautiful love ballad for the recently released film ‘Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani’.

All Izz Well
This youthful, campus number from ‘3 Idiots’ has given a perfect ending to the year. This fun track has raw energy and is filled with whistles in the background. Sung by Sonu Niigaam, Swanand Kirkire and Shaan and composed by Shantanu Moitra, it is a hot favorite among all music channels.

Asin was first choice of Asutosh's Movie opposite Abhishek

She might be the latest entrant in B-Town, but this does not stop this southern beauty to reject big banners if the roles offered to her are not up to the mark.

CHECK OUT: Asin-LONDON DREAMS is an ideal birthday gift

According to latest reports Asin refused to do a film with Ashutosh Gowarikar after she found out that the role offered to her in the film is not going to make a difference to her career in Bollywood. The fact that Asin's last film LONDON DREAMS evoked a lukewarm response at the box-office has made Asin a bit more careful about the kind of roles she has to play in order to secure her career in the slippery lanes of Bollywood.

With Asin going the extra mile to secure her career, let's hope this sacrifice turns out to be a better bet in the long run.

Paa – Playful Affectionate Awesome!

Paa, a modern-day film about inexplicable decisions we take in life…

Paa is a beautiful contemporary tale of human relationships, how easily they can be broken mended healed renewed refreshed cherished and adored. The movie quite simply in a span of 2 and a half hours shows the two faces of relationships. One- how simple they are to form and break. Two- how difficult it is to fulfill or maintain them.

We basically see the movie through the eyes of Auro (Amitabh Bachchan), a twelve year old kid, who suffers from a rare genetic disorder called Progeria. Auro is like typical twelve year old, with his own share of tantrums but a striking streak of understanding in him. He is raised by his single mum Vidhya (Vidya Balan) who is a gynecologist, and his grandmother (Arundhati Nag) who he naughtily calls 'Bum'. Fate being such an unpredictable thing reunites Auro and his father MP Amol Atre(Abhishek Bachchan), through a school competition.
he movie will surprise you in a superb manner. Right from unexpected turns to witty one-liners like- 'Google se bachke kahan jaoge?' What's fresh about this movie is the way the characters approach problems that seem insurmountable so coolly. The way Bum handles the news of her daughter getting pregnant out of wedlock and the way Amol handles the media over news of his lovechild is an example.

There are few places that you'd wish you did not have to see. Like the one where Amol and his father discuss shit while having tea and biscuits. And the other where Auro describes how the potty of the whole world goes inside your body if you eat fish. Yupp. Seafood lovers beware. You might end up wanting to puke!

The picturization of songs are beautiful and actually adds sense to the story. For example, Ittefaq se beautifully portrays the journey of Vidhya from being 'so-in-love' with Amol to the twin pack pregnancy kit.

Big B has done complete justice to the role of Auro. Although at times you can see through Auro and into Amitabh, for the major part, Auro keeps you so engaged that you forget that's Amitabh Bachchan playing that role! As Auro, he takes you through highs and lows, laughter and choky throat.

Vidya Balan once again has proved that she is the queen of effortless acting. She looks very Indian and very beautiful in her cotton saris. Even in her western wear she is fine, except that her strut was a tad bit gawky as if she wasn't confident about her high heels.

Abhishek Bachchan is squeaky clean and good-looking. He is compelling. But he still hasn't reached the point where he can stir up your emotions.

Paresh Rawal is good as ex-politician Atre. When he makes a fool out of himself while talking for the first time ever to his grandson, his expression is worth looking at!

Arundhati Nag is perfect as Vidya's onscreen mother. She has the same effortless style as Vidya that makes her endearing.

Ilaiyaraja's music is soothing and at times teases and tickles you. R. Balki's direction is first-class. Hats off to make-up artists Christien Tinsley and Dominie Till.

Paa is a film that will make you laugh and cry when you're inside the theatre. But when you come out, you'll be surprised you have a self contented smile on your face!

Movie Review: Jail

Movie: Jail
Starring: Neil Nitin Mukesh, Mugdha Godse, Manoj Bajapai, Rahul Singh and Arya Babbar
Director: Madhur Bhandarkar
Right from the time when he started his career as a director, Madhur Bhandarkar has been known for making some realistic, thought-provoking and hard-hitting film. Jail is no different.
Jail tells you the story of life in a prison and what do those, who live in them go through, both physically and mentally. It is a film, which narrates a story about a life, which most of us have not heard or seen before.
Jail, which is the story of Parag Dixit [Neil Nitin Mukesh], who in the beginning of the film probably has no major complaints from life, with a good job and a caring girlfriend (Mugdha Godse]. by his side. But, Parag’s life changes when after meeting with an accident, he finds himself in Jail. Once in Jail, Parag is confused with his life, which has become a hell. The only relief he has in Jail is his friend Nawab (Manoj Bajpai), who feels that Parag is innocent.
Apart from that, Parag only has hope that he will be a free man some day. Until and unless that happens, Parag has to live a life of a prisoner in Jail.
The film depicts the life and stories of prisoners in such a beautiful way that you feel hooked to the film and cannot move from your seat. The story of Parag itself is told in such an interesting way that you get hooked on.
The film also enlightens you about the Indian legal system and the psychology of prisoners. Apart from a part that looks repetitive, other twists and turns like the prisoners escaping from van and Neil getting thrown in a dark cell have been filmed in a great manner.
The work done behind the camera in form of story, screenplay, dialogues, cinematograph and set designing is quite good. Though, there is no scope of music in the film, whatever little music the film has, fits in the film beautifully.
The way Neil Nitin Mukesh has managed to show the sorrow and helplessness of Parag, shows he can act. Manoj Bajbai is another actor, who needs to be applauded for his performance in the film. The two have been supported well by Mugdha Godse, Aarya Babbar, Chetan Pandit,. Rahul Singh and Joe D’Souza.
But on an overall basis, Jail is a Madhur Bhandarkar film. He has once again proved with Jail that when it comes to making realistic and entertaining films, no one can match his skills.

Movie Review: Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani

Movie Review: Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani
Star cast: Ranbir Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, Upen Patel, Darshan Jariwala, Smita Jaykar, Namdeo, Zakir Hussain and Navneet Nishan
Director: Rajkumar Santoshi
Whereas every good director has the capability of making great movies, there are only a few directors, who can make all kinds of films, whether it’s a comedy, a romantic film, a serious drama or an action film with the same perfection. With Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani, Raj Kumar Santoshi has once again proved that he is one such director.
The great aspect of this film is the perfect mixture of romance and comedy, which has been depicted on the screen with great perfection. Especially the way romance has been depicted in the film, makes you feel like falling in love all over again.
This story starts with Prem (Ranbir Kapoor), who runs a Happy Club and believes being happy and keeping others happy. In an attempt to help a close friend, Prem by mistake kidnaps Jenny [Katrina Kaif].  Though Jenny is initially not happy with what Prem has done, she gradually starts understanding him. Whereas, Jenny treats him as a good friend, Prem falls in love with her. But, before he can say anything, he comes to know that Jenny has been adopted by her parents, who want to marry her off to someone she doesn’t like. Prem, on being told by Jenny that she loves another boy Upen Patel , helps both of them to unite since, Upen’s father is also against his son’s marriage with Jenny.
The first hour of the film is simply great. Though the second hour is also equally good, there are certain parts in the second hour like the kidnapping scene, which takes place so suddenly that they look slightly out of sorts. The final portion of the film looks more like a love triangle.
With Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani, Raj Kumar Santoshi has come up with a film that the youth would relate to and love. Apart from a great story and a great script, Raj Kimar’s Santoshi’s direction is worth praising.
The film’s music is foot-tapping and goes well with the film.
The performances by both Ranbir and Katrina are par excellence. The two have been supported well by Darshan Jariwala, Smita Jaykar, Upen Patel, Namdeo, Zakir Hussain and Navneet Nishan.
On a whole, good story, good acting, good music, good direction and the fact that it’s a film for the youth, should ensure that Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani does well at the Box office.

Katrina Kaif and Ranbir Kapoor Pose for New Movie

Katrina Kaif and Ranbir Kapoor are currently hard at work promoting their new movie "Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani." Yesterday the acting pair was spotted at Provogue store in Mumbai and we have the pics!
Katrina looked cute in a short skirt and top, while Ranbir sported his usual look with a pair of jeans and a white shirt. Rumors have been swirling lately about a possible break up between Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone and it’s true that the "Wake Up Sid" star has been busy promoting "Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani" with Katrina. Maybe that’s why some say they are more than just friends.
Well, Katrina has decided to dedicate more time promoting "Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani" than Akshay Kumar’s "De Dana Dan," but we can’t say whether it’s got to do with Ranbir or not. On the other hand, she has been spotted with on and off again beau Salman Khan at events around B-town.
So only time will tell if Katrina Kaif’s and Ranbir Kapoor’s on screen chemistry will translate into something else off screen!
In the meantime, check out our pics of Ranbir and Katrina promoting "Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani" and drop off your comments below.

Film Review: 'Aladin'

The Story:
'Aladin' is a contemporary take on the popular fairy tale "Aladdin". The story is about Aladin Chatterjee (Ritesh Deshmukh) who grows up an orphan in a fantasy-like small town called Khwaish and despite his name, he doesn’t have anything in common with his famous namesake in the classic fairy tale. He is constanlty bullied by school mates who make fun of him and force him to rub lamps in the hopes of seeing a genie appear. One day, a beautiful girl named Jasmine (Jacqueline Fernandez) comes to his college as an exchange student from the U.S. Aladin falls in love with her immediately but so does his biggest bully Kasim (Sahil Khan). But on Aladin’s birthday something strange happens and the movie all of a sudden takes a magic turn as Jasmine gives Aladin a magic lamp that comes out to be a genie named Genius (Amitabh Bachchan). Genius makes Aladin's life a living hell when his three wishes cause chaos in the town. The real destruction begins when a former genie by the name of Ringmaster (Sanjay Dutt) battles out with Genius.
The Cast:
Ritesh Deshmukh as Aladin - a young man in college who lost his parents when he was just a child and who is constantly bullied by his class mates for his name.
Jacqueline Fernandes as Jasmine - Aladin’s love interest. She comes to Khwaish university as an exchange student from America.
Amitabh Bachchan as Genie - he is funny, he is charming and he can really bust the moves for a man of his age, but then again he is a genie whi can do just about anything!
Sanjay Dutt as Ringmaster - the villain who once was a Genie himself but who used his powers for selfish reasons and became an outcast in the Genie community. He is trying to get back to lamp to take over the world.
Sahil Khan as Kasim – the leader of Aladin’s bullies. He also falls in love with Jasmine.
The Crew:
Director: Sujoy Ghosh
Screenplay: Sujoy Ghosh
Writer: Sujoy Ghosh, Suresh Nair and Ritesh Shah
Producer: Sunil A. Lulla and Sujoy Ghosh
Cinematography: Sirsha Ray
Art Director: Sabu Cyril
Music: Vishal-Shekhar
What Worked:
Jacqueline Fernandes makes her movie debut as Jasmine and this former model is a good fit for role of cute Jasmine, and even though her dance moves need to be perfected, she pulled off the choreographies with style. Ritesh Deshmukh will have every girl’s heart skip a beat. He puts on a charming performance as the lost and bewildered Aladin who just wants to live a calm and peaceful life without any complications. Amitabh Bachchan has good comic timing while Sanjay Dutt, who plays the Ringmaster, does a great job as the movie’s villain. Where the story was weak the impressive special effects made up for it.
What Didn't:
Sometimes the jokes became a bit too predictable and a few scenes too cheesy and you almost walk away with an aftertaste of charm overload.
The Soundtrack:
The soundtrack of the film has some pretty preppy dance numbers with the song "Genie Rap" sung by the Big B himself as well as "Giri Giri" by Sanjay Dutt. Vishal-Shekhar's music is strictly okay, however too many songs in the initial reels act as roadblocks in the film.

London Dreams Movie Review

The plot of the flick revolves around the friendship and ambition of two persons -Mannu (Salman Khan) and Arjun (Ajay Devgn). They are childhood friends, related to each other through their music loving families. However, other than music, Mannu and Arjun are as different as cheese and chalk.
While Arjun’s character is very intense, with leanings towards being a dark personality, Mannu is carefree, loves good things of life and drinks freely. Mannu is content with playing his musical instruments at weddings in his village of Punjab.
However, Arjun is a different man altogether and wants to realize the dream of his grandfather of becoming a renowned musician. To realize this dream, Arjun flees from the house of his relative in London and takes shelter in a music shop.Gradually, by dint of his hard work and grit, Arjun forms a musical band with the help of two Pakistani brothers Zoheb(Rannvijay Singha) and Wasim(Aditya Roy Kapoor), who came to London to make name for themselves in the field of music.
Later, Priya (Asin), a girl from a conservative South Indian family who was brought up on the staple diet of carnatic music and bharatnatyam living in Punjab, also joined the band. Priya and Arjun have tender feelings for each other, but refrained from expressing it openly.
Mannu, too, comes to London and joins Arjun’s band on latter’s invitation. Soon Mannu’s carefree style and natural gift in singing, makes him darling of the audiences and he makes great progress on the London’s musical scene.
However, this also breeds suspicion and jealousy between Arjun and Mannu. Arjun is an ambitious person and can not tolerate anyone overtaking him in his band, even it be his friend Mannu. He started fearing Mannu as his clout was increasing by every passing day.
Mannu, unaware of this complicated aspect of Arjun’s personality, continues living in his own simple world. However, the tension reaches its peak when Mannu expresses his love for Priya openly, with whom Arjun was in love (but had never told clearly).
Now, Arjun conceives a plan for a musical tour encompassing three big cities of Rome, Paris and Amsterdam. Arjun’s game plan is to drown Mannu in the web of drug and sex and destroy his career.
What happens to Mannu and Arjun and their friendship forms the rest of the film.
Salman Khan, who plays the happy go lucky character of Mannu, has come out with a winning performance. His character is author backed and the audience takes a liking for him instantly, especially for his irreverent and unconventional style (largely associated with him in real life, too) in the film.
The scene in the post interval period, when an inebriated Salman Khan feigns ignorance to Ajay Devgn’s talk of taking revenge, is superb and the macho actor seems so real in the frame. His facial expression perfectly justifies the sequence. Salman Khan stealing the original tunes of Ajay Devgn and making his own on their basis is also worth watching in the film.
Ajay Devgan, who plays the part of Salman Khan’s friend Arjun on the celluloid, has portrayed his character with a rare intensity. In any case, Ajay Devgn has always been known for his brooding and intense personality and this character once again justifies Ajay’s specialty.
Ajay Devgn’s intensity is worth watching in the sequence where he vouches to take revenge on Salman Khan for usurping his tunes. Ajay Devgn’s sinister planning to destroy his close buddy Salman Khan out of jealousy, has come out beautifully.
Ajay Devgn has infused life in the character and makes it look real on the screen. His eyes say it all. The chemistry between Salman Khan and Ajay Devgn, who had earlier worked in ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’ , is terrific, and both seem to have helped each other in coming out with top notch performances in the film.
However, Ajay Devgn’s outburst at the end of the concert seems inexplicable and the intense actor does not come out as convincing as in other sequences of the flick. Even his making it big in city of London without any help, seems unconvincing.
Asin, who plays the lovely character of Priya, enacts her character with panache. She looks stunningly beautiful and her romantic sequences with Salman Khan have come out
very well. This was her second outing after Aamir Khan’s ‘Ghajini’ and the southern sexy siren has proved her worth in bollywood. She is certainly going to get a new name of ‘Chennai express’ (Salman Khan refers her as Chennai express in the film) in bollywood from now onwards.
Om Puri, who does not get much scope in the film, has done justice to his small role. Rannvijay Singha, who plays the part of Zoheb and is part of Ajay Devgn’s band, passes the muster. Brinda Parekh has done average job, while Manoj Pahwa succeeds in infusing laughter at some places. Others lend able support to the main cast of the flick.
The direction of Vipul Shah is at par with his earlier hits like ‘Namaste London’ and he has executed most of the scene efficiently. However, at some places he seems to have been bogged down by inefficient writing. For instance, Ajay Devgn’s outburst after the concert and a song number after the emotional reunion of Ajay and Salman are hard to understand.
However, the weakest link in the film is its music by Shankar Ehshan Loy. Not a single track is going to be popular with the masses, despite of the whole film being based on music and musicians. Ideally, the music should have been the strongest point of the flick but it is just opposite, the weakest point.
But the cinematographer has done a commendable job in capturing the spirit of concerts in the flick. The cinematographer Sejal Shah has done an exceptional work on this front and must be appreciated. The background music provided by Salim- Sulaiman goes well with the mood of the flick.
Salman Khan and Ajay Devgn have come out with winning performances but the subject of the flick is such that it will appeal mainly to the urbane, yuppie crowds in big cities. The lack of hit music will also keep the masses away from theatres, despite of it being a good movie. Above average fare.

Kurbaan’s Release Rescheduled

Producer Karan Johar has rescheduled the release of his next film Kurbaan.
2009 hasn’t been a great year for Akshay Kumar. Though, Kambakkht Ishq is one of the few hits of the year, Akshay has had three average releases this year in the form of Chandni Chowk to China, 8 x 10 Tasveer and Blue.
On the other hand, the only release Saif Ali Khan has had this year, Love Aaj Kal has been one of the biggest grosser of the year. So as far as the present year is concerned, Saif is a bigger star than Akshay.
Not really, if Karan Johar is to be believed. Karan Johar is said to have put the release of his film Kurbaan, starring Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor, by one week ahead because he does not want his film to be released on the same day as Akshay Kumar’s De Dana Dan. Kurbaan will now release on November 20 instead of November 27.
If past records are of any importance, Karan Johar may have taken a very intelligent decision by avoiding a clash of Kurbaan and De Dana Dan.
Whereas Kurbaan has been in news for some intimate scenes between Saif and Kareena, De Dana Dan stars the team of Akshay Kumar, Sunil Shetty and Paresh Rawal, who have given a number of hits together. The film is also a comedy, a strong point of both Akshay and Paresh Rawal. If that wasn’t enough, the film also stars Katrina Kaif, the lead lady of Bollywood, who these days is turning all she touches into gold.
So, may be Karan Johar has taken a right decision by trying to rescheduling the release of Kurbaan. By making Kurbaan release one week ahead of its time, Karan Johar has ensured that the film will have an exclusive run at the box office at least for a week.

Jail Cleared by Censor Board

Madhur Bhandarkar’s Jail has been cleared by the censor board after seven cuts.
Madhur Bhandarkar is known for his confrontation with the censor board. Most of his films, whether it was Page 3 or Fashion have taken a dig at the system and have had difficulty in getting passed by the censor board.
So, it certainly wasn’t a new experience for Madhur when the censor board raised objection to his new film Jail. Reports suggest that the censor board has eventually cleared Jail but not before it suggested seven cuts and gave the film a U/A certificate.
According to a source, “The censor board was very strict. Seven scenes, including a love-making scene between Neil and Mugdha Godse, a homosexual scene, a sex joke and Neil’s nude scene, have all been removed. Abusive dialogues have also been deleted from the film. Though Madhur was not ready to give into the demands of the censor board, he couldn’t do much because, he was also not ready to release the film with an A certificate.”
Masdhur did argue with the censor board over some scenes like one of the much talked about controversial scene of Neil, but when he realized that by giving in some of the demands of the board, rather than an A certificate, he could get an U/A certificate for the film, he gave into some of these demands.
Sources in the censor board say that they had loved the film and were ready to pass the film without any cut but alongside, they wanted to give it an Adult only certificate. But ultimately, in order to get more viewers to cinema halls to watch the film, it was cleared from the censor board with an U/A certificate only.
